THE MARKET FOR NEW ENERGY VEHICLES IN KAZAKHSTAN IN THE FIRST HALF OF 2026
· Sales of NEV vehicles in Kazakhstan increased more than 3.5 times over six months
According to the “Kazakhstan Automobile Union” (KAU), in January–June 2026, official dealers sold 3,657 passenger vehicles in the NEV segment, which is 266% more than in the same period last year (998 units).
Over the six-month period, dealers sold 2,640 plug-in hybrids (PHEV) and extended-range electric vehicles (EREV), while sales of fully electric vehicles (BEV) amounted to 1,017 units.
Anar MAKASHEVA, President of KAU: “Today, new energy vehicles are no longer a niche product and are becoming one of the fastest-growing segments of Kazakhstan’s automotive market. Plug-in hybrids and extended-range electric vehicles are attracting strong interest from buyers. These models make it possible to enjoy the advantages of electric drive without range limitations, which is especially relevant for Kazakhstan.”
BYD became the leader of the NEV market in the first half of the year. Dealers sold 2,042 vehicles of the brand, which is 241% more than in the same period last year. Geely Galaxy ranked second with 689 vehicles, while Li took third place with 588 extended-range crossovers. The top five also included Zeekr (150 units) and ROX (95 units).
Among models, the highest demand was recorded for the hybrid BYD Song Plus DM-i (737 units), Geely Galaxy EX5 EM-i (655 units), BYD Chazor (510 units), the electric BYD Song Plus (357 units), Li L6 (340 units), BYD Yuan Up (333 units), Li L7 (176 units), BYD Sealion 7 (102 units), ROX 01 (95 units) and Zeekr 7X (74 units).
The steady growth in sales of fully electric vehicles should be noted separately. In January–June, official dealers sold 1,017 electric vehicles, which is more than twice the figure recorded in the same period last year. At the same time, the segment of plug-in hybrids and extended-range electric vehicles grew by 431%, confirming a shift in buyer preferences toward the most versatile technologies.
Among vehicles with a conventional hybrid powertrain (HEV), Toyota remains the leader, with dealers selling 765 vehicles over six months. It was followed by Lexus (50 units) and Porsche (10 units).
NEV (New Energy Vehicles) are vehicles that use alternative energy sources instead of traditional gasoline or diesel. These include electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids and extended-range electric vehicles, which have an internal combustion engine that operates exclusively as a generator to recharge the battery.
